Zinc is an essential mineral for immunity and needed by the body to produce collagen and dopamine. While chronic alcohol use is known to cause zinc deficiency, studies regarding zinc deficiency in smokers vary. This study suggests zinc deficiency in smokers, compared to non-smokers, ( 1 ) and this study concludes that there are inconsistencies in studies regarding zinc levels in smokers, but found lower zinc levels in the hair of smokers, and also suggests a lower level of zinc in smokers could be based on it’s relationship of copper. ( 2 )

Zinc and copper have a symbiotic relationship which means as if zinc levels are high, copper levels are inversely lower. Because of the elevated copper levels found in smokers, it would make sense that their zinc levels are lower. Because of the relationship between zinc and copper, zinc can be taken as a supplement alone to lower or balance copper levels. Additionally, zinc is often included in copper supplements.

The daily upper level limit for zinc is 50mg for adults.

I plan to take zinc in the detox phase of my smoking cessation to help restore imbalance and lower copper levels.
