What really causes the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking? The decline in red blood cells and dopamine in the first 24 hours of quitting is enough to stall metabolism. But on top of that, the gut of a smoker which is overwhelmed with “bad bacteria” is now getting a lot more oxygen making the bad bacteria grow in cessation.
The good news is that the body repairs after we finally kick the habit. At 120 days all of your red blood cells you had as a smoker have been replaced with red blood cells your body made as a non-smoker.
Additionally, your brain has learned how to release dopamine again and has recovered from the 15-20% deficiency at the offset of your cessation.
So stick with it, if the withdrawal symptoms are getting to you, speak to your doctor and do whatever you can to make it through the first 4 months.
