NAC is a detoxifying amino acid which acts as a powerful antioxidant by producing glutathione and neutralizing free radicals. Glutathione detoxes the liver, the lungs and the brain. It’s so powerful that it’s been used in emergency rooms for decades to treat people with acetaminophen poisoning. NAC also helps immunity by stopping viral replication. Every time I feel a cold, a sore throat or the flu coming on, I take two NAC before bed and wake up feeling great. NAC may also help keep sugar levels balanced which helps to minimize cravings, since cravings are often brought on by sugar spikes. There are several studies on the use of NAC for substance use disorders ranging from alcohol, nicotine and gambling to cocaine and obsessive behavior disorder and many of the studies show that NAC did in fact help people to use less and/or go longer with out using. NAC can cause kidney stones, so it’s recommended to take it with Vitamin C to prevent stones from forming.

NAC can also be used as mouth rinse to detoxify the oral biome by products of cigarette smoking in the saliva, namely, carcinogenic acetaldehyde. To use as a mouth rinse, open a capsule and add a bit (studies use tablets containing 5-10 mg, most capsules contain 500-600mg) of the NAC powder to filtered water, rinse for as long as you can and spit out. This can be done right after your last cigarette and through your first few days to detox. ( 1, 2 )

In the first few days of quitting I take 1-2 every night before bed after that, I take NAC as needed. NAC has been shown to be likely safe in doses of up to 2000mg per day.
