Smokers are deficient a number of vitamins and minerals to include Vitamin A (Beta Carotenoids), Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium Iron, Magnesium and Selenium. When we smoke, our bodies “learn” to function without these nutrients and as our “reserves” of these nutrients get depleted from chronic tobacco use, these deficiencies often go unnoticed. A good multivitamin is a great daily supplement for anyone to take, (even if you’re still smoking) but they are especially great for people when they quit smoking, as even if we can eat all the nutrients we need, our ability to absorb all the nutrients may be impaired. Multivitamins provide a lot in one pill and help start restoring our bodies to our pre-smoking selves.
Another reason I take a multivitamin is they provides vitamins and minerals I want to get, but don’t want to take extra capsule for it. These include vitamin A (beta-carotenoids), vitamin E, iron and zinc, all of which can be toxic in higher doses and there have been studies linking vitamin A supplementation in smokers and those in cessation to cancer. So I prefer to get those vitamins in smaller doses and food sources, I get zinc from my multivitamin and copper supplement.
I take my multivitamin with lunch along with omega-3 for better absorption, I take Centrum just as a personal choice because I feel like I’m getting everything, but I’m sure there are many brands that are just as good.
