Iodine is somewhat of a “wonder” nutrient. I first discovered it about a month after I relapsed from quitting in 2020 and started taking it as a smoker. I’ve read a lot about iodine, but there’s still a lot contradicting data out there about it. Iodine is needed for thyroid function which plays a role in how your body metabolizes food and people on thyroid medication or known thyroid issues should discuss with their doctor before taking it.
I take iodine everyday first thing in the morning, before I even make coffee and it has that “first cigarette with coffee” effect, which makes “you go.” So it’s definitely a go- to for constipation. Iodine also provides an energy boost and its detoxifying.
As I learn more about iodine I often wonder why the FDA took it out of breads and other packaged goods in the US back in the 60’s and 70’s. To me, iodine is somewhat like a wonder mineral. It’s detoxifying, helps with metabolism, provides energy, and is available in relatively few foods I eat regularly like seaweed, kelp, sea algae and of course, Morton’s Iodized Salt.
In addition to taking iodine I traded in my fancy kosher and pink sea salts for Morton’s Iodized Salt. You can get iodine in tincture (which is usually a kelp derivative) or capsule form, I have tried both and prefer the capsule.
The upper daily limit for iodine is 1100mcg. I usually take 225mcg daily, sometimes 500mcg but I never exceed 500mcg.
Iodine may interact with thyroid medications, consult your doctor if you have known thyroid issues.
