Coconut oil is a healthy oil that’s great for your skin and can be used in your cooking as an alternative to olives oils or vegetable oils and offers a really nice flavor. It’s also an anti-bacterial.
I’m using coconut oil for oil pulling to reduce bacteria in my mouth as part of my detox from quitting smoking. This ancient Ayurvedic practice has been done for centuries in India and it has been shown to improve oral health and reduce bacteria.
Smokers have 40% more buccal bacteria than non-smokers. Read all about smoking cessation and the gut microbiome here. So oil pulling with coconut oil is a part of my detox plan to help neutralize the bacteria. Make sure you have an empty water bottle or container you can spit into before you begin, take about a quarter of a tablespoon of organic coconut oil into your mouth and then you just swish it around for up to 20 minutes or for as long you can. If you like you can also add a tiny drop of essential oil (tea tree, peppermint, rosemary, lemon or orange) to the coconut oil. Follow up with rinsing with water and brushing, and flossing your teeth.
